Another year has begun with a bang, hasn’t it? Are your days already flying by before you can get a grip?
I don’t know about you, but we’re having a great year so far at my school. We’ve had a change in administration, and with that, the mental attitudes that have kept us limited to our own visions of success. It’s all for the better, though. It’s a much kinder, softer, nicer, more positive place to be, and I’m really enjoying it so far.
One of my newest plans of attack for my lessons is to try to keep some semblance of a theme throughout a month’s time. Now, I’ve tried this before and it’s fallen apart before November, but I’ve put a lot of work into it and think I’m on to something. For me, an entire unit or theme starts at a very basic level: journal topics. If, every day, I can get the kids writing for five minutes at the start of class on something that I can pull as a thread through all our lessons, I happen to think I’ll be more successful at making the themes sink in. (Does *anything* sink in to a middle schooler’s brain? We shall see :))

On that note, I’ve prepped a month of journal topics related to the themes of friendship, connection and community building. They’re all important to the other, and only make each other stronger…which, in the long run, is what I want to do with my kiddos. Download, print, enjoy.
And have an incredible year!
