Today it becomes official: we are halfway through October. This takes us one week closer to winter and one week further from summer. Before the frost hits, let’s have one more hurrah for summer. The Boys of Summer by Don Henley has always been one of my absolute favorite songs. You can hear his sadness and see those empty streets in his tone. One of the best and most memorable lessons I taught to newcomer students was to listen to the song and draw the images the words inspired. Listening to sixth graders humming Don Henley in the hallway between classes was such a treat!
Since we’re highlighting the autumn season this week, it’d be a real travesty to let October melt into November without taking the time to enjoy a delicious, seasonal drink of some kind. You’d literally have to live in a cave to miss all the hubbub over pumpkin-spice this and that, but us Midwestern girls didn’t grow up on frapp-crappa-lattes (as my very hip, west-coast bestie Dru likes to say). Nope, we grew up sipping yummy apple cider our parents picked up, fresh-pressed, on the way home from the pumpkin patch beside the orchard. You know the cider I’m talking about. Just an edge of fermentation to give it that bite you don’t get from overprocessed apple juice, and lots of little floaty pieces of apple. So rich you only needed one glass, but such an ingrained part of the autumn season that you had to have one. Now that I’m all grown up, an adultified apple cider to enjoy on a crisp, Friday evening unwinding after a day of work is absolute bliss. This simple recipe from A Beautiful Mess will be the highlight of my tomorrow night…what about you?
Before we head out of the autumn season into the hectic craziness of the holidays, be sure to make the most of these slower days by using the beauty and inspiration of the season to spice up your blog posts. So how about we simmer together a batch of spiced apple cider and brainstorm some fall-themed blog posts this weekend? Sounds good to me! Just don’t let the week slip by without enjoying the season. It’ll be gone before you know it!
