Anyone who knows me knows I love pigs. I’m not bacon that up 😉
I’ve always had a soft spot for the sweet, oinking creatures. My grandfather was a pig farmer who took great pride in the hogs he raised. It was the thrill of my young life to hop in his dirty, dusty pickup and go dump buckets of corn in beat-up aluminum troughs on hot summer afternoons. Some of my favorite childhood memories involve watching him round them up and “soo-ey!” them to eat.
My sister and I loved those pink sweethearts so much that, as a perfect foil to my second-favorite childhood novel, he gave us our own runt to raise one spring, two little Ferns and a Wilbur. (Actually, Corky). Corky was raised in a shoe box but gradually grew so large he barely fit through the garage door frame and became an outdoor pig. When he was too old to run, grandpa trucked him out to a friend’s farm where we could visit, give him corn and kisses, and he could roam around with other farm-animals-turned-pets to the end of his days.
For people who only know pigs as ham, sausage and bacon, here are a few articles to celebrate National Pig Day by understanding that these wonderful animals are much smarter and cleaner than folks give them credit for.
If you’d like a worksheet with three comprehension/skill questions for each of these links (questions cover material from only the first three links; the 4th is a compilation of pig videos) and the grading key, click here:
